Customize
The locator editor: profiles, a live preview, every setting.
Settings → Customize.
Everything about how a locator looks and behaves is set here, in an editor built like Shopify's own: the settings on the left, grouped into categories that open one at a time, and a live preview of the real locator beside them.
Two kinds, and their profiles
Customize opens on a list of what you can put on your storefront:
Store locator — anywhere: search, filters and every location you have. Product finder — on a product page: the stores near a shopper that carry the product they are looking at.
Under each is its profiles. A profile is one locator's worth of settings under a name, and a theme block points at one, so a shop can run several that look and behave differently from the same list of locations — a full-width locator on its own page, a compact finder inside a product page.
Click a profile to edit it. Its name at the top of the editor is also how you move between profiles of that kind, and the buttons beside it duplicate, rename and delete the one you are on, or make it the default — the profile a block of that kind uses when it hasn't picked one. Each kind has its own default, so a product finder never falls back to a store locator's settings.
Duplicating opens the copy, since changing the copy is the only reason to make one.
The two offer the same settings, except that a product finder has no filters panel: the product is the filter. See Product finder.
The preview
The pane beside the settings is the real locator — the same code your shoppers run — with your own locations in it. Change a setting and it updates in place.
Every setting takes effect as you change it — including the map, which redraws when you resize the locator, and the colors, which update without the map reloading.
It draws with your own map provider and key, so the map here is the map your shoppers get. One caveat: if that key is restricted to your storefront's domains — which is how it should be — the map may be refused in the admin. Everything else in the preview still works; the map area is what goes blank.
The locator also sits on a plain background here rather than inside your theme's page.
Customize only appears once a map provider is connected, since there is no map to build against before that. See Map provider.
The Desktop and Mobile buttons show how it behaves at each width. On a narrow screen the search, map and list stack.
The settings
Every setting, by the category it sits in.
Layout
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 600px | How tall the locator is. On narrow screens the search, map and list stack instead |
| Search and list panel | Left | Which side the panel sits on. The map's zoom buttons move to the opposite side |
| Panel width | 340px | How wide that panel is |
| Text size | 15px | The locator's base text size; everything scales from it |
Map
The map opens framed on every location, so shoppers see your whole footprint before they search.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Map style | Standard | Standard, light, dark, satellite or terrain |
| Pin color | Red | The color of the default pin. Locations using a saved marker ignore it |
| Show zoom and full screen buttons | On | Full screen takes the whole locator full screen, with the list as a drawer over the map |
| Zoom with the scroll wheel | Off | When off, shoppers hold Ctrl or ⌘ to zoom, so scrolling the page never gets stuck on the map |
Leaving scroll zoom off is the right default for a locator inside a long page.
Search and filters
Covered in more depth in Search & radius.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Show address search | On | The search box above the results |
| Suggest addresses as shoppers type | Off | Completes the address as they type, using your map provider |
| Limit search to countries | Blank | Two-letter codes, comma separated: us, ca |
| Show "Use my location" | On | Leads the search box, or stands as its own button when search is off |
| Distance units | Miles | Miles or kilometers |
| Search radiuses | 10, 20, 50, 75 | The distances shoppers choose between, in the units above |
| Default radius | Largest | Must be one of the radiuses above. Blank starts with the widest, showing the most stores |
| Show filters | On | The Filters panel and its button |
| Filter categories to show | All | Which filter categories this locator offers, in the order you drag them |
| With several filters chosen, show locations with | All | Whether two filters mean both or either |
| Let shoppers filter by product | On | A menu of the products assigned to your locations |
| On a product page, show only stores stocking it | On | Applies wherever this profile is used on a product page |
Location details
What shoppers see in the list, and when they select a location.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Selected location details | Popup | A popup on the map, or the panel in place of the list. The panel has a back button and suits hours and photos |
| Show number of results | On | The count above the list |
| Show distance | On | How far each location is from the searched point |
| Show address | On | |
| Show phone, email and website | On | |
| Show social links | On | |
| Show store hours | On | Today's hours in the list, the full week when a location is selected |
| Show photos | On | A location's photos, as a slideshow |
| Products at this location | Off | The products assigned to a location, listed at the end of its details |
| How photos fit | Fill | Filling crops a photo to the slideshow's shape; showing the whole one fits it inside, with space either side |
| Slideshow controls | Arrows and dots | Arrows, dots, both or neither |
| Move through photos automatically | Off | Pauses while a shopper is looking, and stays off for anyone who asks for less movement |
| Seconds between photos | 5s | Only used with autoplay on |
| "Get directions" button | With the details | With the details, pinned to the bottom of the panel, or hidden |
| Custom fields | None | Which custom fields to show, in the order you drag them |
| Show custom field names | On | Whether each value is introduced by its name |
Pinned directions are worth knowing about: the button stays in view at the bottom of the panel while the shopper scrolls the rest of the details, which matters for locations with hours, photos and a product list.
One setting here is about the page rather than the shop: On a product page, show only stores stocking it. Where a locator using this profile sits on a product page, it narrows itself to that product; everywhere else it shows every location.
Colors
A Palette dropdown at the top fills in every color below it — Light, Dark, Sand, Forest or Ink. Change a color afterwards and the palette reads as Custom.
The colors belong to the profile, which is the whole of it: there is no separate list of palettes to keep in step, and nothing can repaint a live locator later. A second look for a second locator is a second profile.
Every color is optional. Leave one blank and the locator works it out from the others, which is why a palette that sets only a background and an accent still produces a coherent locator.
| Color | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Background | The panel, popups and inputs sit on this |
| Panel | The search bar and the filters footer. Blank shades the background slightly |
| Text | Blank picks black or white, whichever reads on the background |
| Borders | Every border and divider, the locator's own outline included |
| Accent | Buttons, the chosen filter, the selected location |
| Accent text | Blank picks black or white, whichever reads on the accent |
| Input background | Search and the dropdowns. Blank uses the background |
| Card background | Blank leaves cards showing the panel behind them |
| Card hover | Blank shades the card slightly on hover |
| Card selected | The card of the location showing on the map. Blank tints it with the accent |
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Blend with the page | Off | Drops the locator's background and takes the text color from your theme, so it sits on whatever the section behind it uses |
Borders and corners
The outline around the whole locator is set separately from the borders and corners of the parts inside it, so you can round your cards without rounding the locator, or frame the locator without outlining anything in it.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Outer border width | 1px | The line around the whole locator. 0 removes it |
| Outer corner radius | 0px | Rounds the locator's own corners, clipping the map and the list to them |
| Inside border width | 1px | Every line within: the list's edge against the map, cards, inputs and buttons. 0 removes them |
| Inside corner radius | 8px | Rounds buttons, inputs, cards and popups. The photo slideshow stays square |
In full screen the locator is the screen, so it drops its outer border and corners whatever these say. The product finder is a plain list with no frame around it, so only the two inside settings appear for it.
Things with no setting
Deliberately automatic, so there is one less thing to get wrong:
- The map frames every location when the locator loads, and reframes on the current results when a shopper clears their search or deselects a location.
- A filter no location uses is never shown.
- Empty fields are left out rather than shown blank — a location with no phone number simply has no phone line.
- Autoplay and animation respect a shopper's reduced-motion setting.
